Notably, OpenAI, which previously restricted military access to its models, has reversed course in recent years, reflecting a broader industry trend towards such government partnerships.
In late February 2026, OpenAI finalized a landmark agreement with the Pentagon to deploy advanced AI systems in classified environments. Proponents argue that AI has the potential to make military operations more precise and efficient, claiming that by analyzing vast amounts of data, these systems can help reduce human error, minimize casualties, and enable better-informed decision-making. AI tools may also enable quicker responses in new situations, which is increasingly important amid evolving warfare, giving countries a strategic advantage and possibly avoiding or limiting prolonged conflicts.
