Fences went up around the tennis courts on October 1, showing the beginning of a project that will bring a major improvement to the school’s tennis courts. According to Director of Athletics Mike White, the new courts will provide a safer playing environment, create a stronger community, and give the tennis team a true home court advantage.
“I am excited to have a crowd and a home atmosphere instead of having to drive to different courts for every match,” said Katherine O’Neill ‘29,who has been on the team since 7th grade.
In previous seasons, the Dana teams home matches were played at various locations: Wellesley College, Wellesley Country Club, and Longfellow Tennis Club in both Natick and Wayland. Because the matches were spread across multiple locations, it was often more difficult for spectators to come and watch. With the new courts on campus, the team hopes to build a stronger connection with fans being able to come out and support the players, according to Katherine.
The new project will address several issues with the old courts. The new layout will rotate 90 degrees and increase the number of courts from five courts to six. The change in direction is critical because it will reduce the sun glare, which previously messed up the players’ vision during practices.
The old courts also had cracks and uneven surfaces that created tripping hazards. The conditions limited the team’s ability to use all the courts safely during practice. The new courts will boast a flatter playing surface, letting players practice and compete in a safer environment.
According to Mr. White, the new courts will also include spectator seating and lighting, letting the Dana community play tennis after daylight hours.
The construction project has faced some delays. While the school had a timeline in mind, the town of Wellesley only recently permitted the construction. As a result, the completion date is still uncertain; Mr. White hopes it will be done by the spring tennis season.
Beyond the benefits for the tennis team, the project is also expected to improve the appearance of the school. Mr. White said the new courts “will enhance the entry into campus.” Since the courts may be the first athletic view that prospective students will see when visiting Dana Hall, the upgraded space will make a strong first impression.
Once complete, the new tennis courts will offer more than improved places to play. They will provide the team with a safer facility, and new opportunities to bring the school community together.
