What is the Spectator’s opinion on teachers swearing in class?

Since the Spectator is made up of multiple strong-minded students, we all have different opinions on this subject. However, the obvious answer would be no. School is supposed to be a professional and respectful place where students feel comfortable to express their feelings without judgement – when teachers swear, this comfort can be infringed upon.

What should I do when I run out of matcha and cannot be performative 🙁

Throw on a quarter zip and throw in some wired earbuds. Who says you need matcha to be performative? Matcha is not niche anymore. Buy some baggy jeans and a tote bag if you really want to go for it. And to top it off, invest in some feminist literature from the 19th century – such as a classic Jane Austin novel.

How do you find out what you want to major in and what you think is right for you?

I think the most important thing is that it is okay to not know what you want to do when you get to college. For me, I have known what I wanted to major in since I was young. I took things that I liked such as legos and racing, and in high school, I realized that I could turn what I was passionate about into something I could continue to study for the next four years. I encourage you to find your passions, and try many things. See what you enjoy doing – something that doesn’t seem like a chore and is not a pain to do.

What do you think is the best way to get homework done, whether as a boarder or day student?

For me, as a day student, I cannot get any work done at my house. I always have to go to Starbucks or some other coffee shop to lock in. I’m writing this from the one in downtown Lake Forest. Check out our reviews of local coffee shops from the last issue if you want some recommendations! For a boarder, I would advise going somewhere on campus, whether it is the library or ACE, but somewhere that is not your dorm, as a means to minimize distractions. Doing homework earlier in the day is also beneficial – it makes things easier.

How do you deal with having extracurriculars plus LFA sports and homework and not get so tired?

It is hard, for sure. Managing your time is one of the most important skills to learn in high school. The best thing to do is to utilize your free periods and time before practice starts. If you have one free period a day, and a bit of time before sports begin, you can get an hour of work out of the way. After practice and other commitments, eat dinner and then lock in again. It’s tiring and boring, but if you can capitalize on building these skills now, your future self will be thankful. Also, maximize your weekends. Have fun with your friends, but before you go out, head somewhere to study and get work done.

My “friend” constantly gives me backhanded comments and is SO MEAN but all my other friends like her! What should I do?

Although this might seem like a tricky situation, protecting your feelings and heart is the biggest priority. If your friends choose to hang out with this girl, ask them if they notice the comments too, because most likely, they are feeling the same way. If not, ask your friend who is being rude to stop being disrespectful to you. Although this will probably be an awkward conversation, the outcome will be beneficial and make you feel better about your friend group. Lastly, remember that you never know what anyone is going through, so asking them if they are okay is a very mature and compassionate thing to do. They could just be projecting their feelings onto you and not at you.
