Over the past decade, the number of television viewers of The Emmy’s – Tv’s glitzy annual awards show – has dramatically decreased. Of those viewers still tuning in, most are not watching for the television awards themselves, but for the extravagant outfits. I was one of these viewers this year, as the actors strutted the red carpet. There were many stunning outfits and others that didn’t resonate with my personal taste. But one common theme of a lot of the outfits, for better and worse, was glitter and sparkles.
One of my favorite dresses was Padma Lakshmi’s, an author, model, activist, producer and television host. She wore a strapless dress that was summery yet still elegant and mature. She wore accessories with shiny accents that tied in the whole outfit nicely.
Another dress I liked was Dakota Fanning’s, who is an American actress. Instead of glitter or sequins she went with pearls which have the same effect of catching the light. The cut was also unique but not too “out there” with a slightly ruched top. While I liked the dress itself, the color was very close to her skin tone, therefore washing her out.
While Lakshmi and Fanning’s dresses felt appropriate for such an extravagant event, I saw a lot of gowns that felt too informal and almost immature. Producer Siri Pinter wore a dress that almost felt like a high school prom dress; it was a high neck lavender dress paired with purple nails and a white rhinestone purse. While the dress itself had a pleasant design, it felt underwhelming and immature for The Emmys, as well as not being the most flattering on her.
Liza Colón-Zayas, an actress from New York, also has a dress that stuck out for its lack of appeal. In my opinion it was neither flattering in color or style. The gown also had a very young feel when she would have looked amazing in a more mature shimmery green, rather than a bright chunky sparkle.
While the viewership of the Emmys went up slightly in 2024, I have a feeling it was due to the entertaining banter of the father-son hosts: Eugene and Dan Levy, rather than the sparkles.
