Over the summer, I studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain with CIEE Global Navigators: a program that takes high school and college students abroad. Studying Spanish Language and Culture, our group of 74 students lived in homestays across Barcelona and attended classes near Passeig de Gracia, one of Barcelona’s most famous avenues, known for rich architecture and a luxurious shopping experience.

During the day, sections of classes would take public transport to explore a new part of the city. From visiting La Sagrada Familia, to a tapas-making workshop, to having a scavenger hunt through the Gothic Quarter – the first four days of the week let students immerse themselves in the rich culture of Barcelona. During lunch, students indulged in foods from local restaurants or tried a lunch packed from their homestay families. Spanish classes ran five times a week. On weekends, students could explore Barcelona on their own or with friends.

This experience was life-changing. It pushed me into uncomfortable situations that forced me to practice independence. Being away from home and my traditional support system adds another layer of independence.

But the most important part was the connections I made abroad. Being in Barcelona gave me the opportunity to meet people from all over the country that I would never have crossed paths with otherwise. The friendships you build while discovering a foreign country are like no other. Traipsing around Barceloneta Beach, strolling through the Picasso Museum and trying every gelato shop in sight with friends are memories I will always appreciate. Today, I am still close friends with the people I met in Barcelona, and I have CIEE Study Abroad to thank for that.

This experience is so unique and rewarding, and I encourage anyone who is potentially considering studying abroad to pursue it. It is daunting at first, especially if it’s your first time, but the rewards are infinite. You will gain the experience of a lifetime.
