this summer, Kent School built a new dance studio on the bottom floor of Mattison. With marley flooring, walls adorned with mirrors and ballet bars, this space is an exciting addition to the school’s campus. It is a large studio that gives students the opportunity to practice movement and dance without having to make their way into town.

Ms. Morris, who oversees the Kent School Dance Program, states that she has a “class of thirteen, and they all fit,” displaying the capacity of the newly built studio to be available for a large group of students.

We continue to have a great dance facility in the town of Kent, about a 10 minute walk from campus, but the distance restricts students from practicing dance during the day. With the construction of this new studio, Ms. Morris explains that students will be able to “dance in their free time and create pieces for the student dance showcase,” as well as participating in dance classes during the academic day.

Overlooking the brook, the studio has an amazing view that encourages creativity and exploration. It inspires not only students enrolled in the after-school program but also students taking Movement for Athletes, many of whom are new to dance.

Dancers at Kent have long awaited this project as it gives them an easier way to practice what they love and pursue their passion; said Dani ‘26, a member of Kent School Dance Ensemble, more students will now be able to “learn more about themselves through dance.”

The convenience of this newly-constructed area will be a game changer for students interested in dance and movement providing them with more time to create, learn and have fun.
