The Hotchkiss Record
Tyler Rosenblum ’27 is a four-year Senior from Falls Village, Connecticut. Rosenblum currently pursues his interests in theater and singing through clubs and co-curriculars. He previously took theater for three years until his Upper-Mid fall and has taken part in every school musical performance since coming to the school. Rosenblum is the current head of the a cappella group Bluenotes and student band MB140, as well as the stage manager and co-director of Blackbox productions. He is also a head of Makers Club.
What inspired you to get involved in performing arts and singing?
Involvement in theater was inspired by a love of music for me. I’ve always been a big fan of music; my parents, especially my dad, are both big music fans, so I grew up with them playing different kinds of super incredible music. I have been singing for as long as I can remember, and theater blossomed from that. I remember seeing a production at a local playhouse near home, and that inspired me to do theater. I thought, ‘that looks like so much fun!’ My previous school had a performing arts production program. I started with that and eventually began doing more theater.
When did you start your art journey?
Singing has been with me for as long as I can remember; it has always been a big part of my personality. My first performance was held in second grade for my school talent show. I remember singing “One Call Away” by Charlie Puth. I started theater around fourth grade after I completed my first production.
How did Hotchkiss affect your artistic career?
Previously, I used to do a lot of singing on my own. But when I came to Hotchkiss, I joined Bluenotes, which introduced me to a cappella and group singing. While I was the only prep that joined, it was really cool. I also joined MB140 in my prep year which was also really exciting because I had the chance to perform with a whole band. Hotchkiss has enabled me to be part of all these activities—all these opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Have you ever thought about quitting your artistic career?
No, never. It’s one of the things that is really important to me. Especially for music, it is like an escape for me. It grounds me and keeps me calm and happy.
What advice would you give to young or aspiring artists?
Try new things and get outside of your comfort zone. At Hotchkiss, giving activities I considered before a shot has been really enlightening. Even beyond art programs, giving new experiences a shot really enriched my Hotchkiss experience. I tried taking a harder math class—I switched up to the honors maths track last year—and it really opened my eyes to how much I enjoy math.
I became a part of completely new communities during my prep year—I joined Bluenotes and MB140 and suddenly I was performing in front of the whole school. It seemed scary at first, but now I’m a head of the club, and it is something I really enjoy doing.
