This season, Belmont Hill’s varsity squash team is set to build on last year’s efforts, under the continued leadership of Coach Brownell and new captains Leighton Calhoun ’25 and Jai Karande ’25. With a strong core of returning players, the team is looking to maintain a competitive presence in the ISL and make a push for the New England tournament and Division I National Championships in Pennsylvania.
Building on the already established team, Leighton mentioned, “Our younger players have been excellent at stepping up when necessary and supporting the team in critical moments.” He added, “They are also eager to learn, which has been a huge plus for the team.” When asked about the role of the more experienced players, he responded, “The leadership from the older players on the team is really strong. I think it’s reflecting very well on the younger guys on the squad.”
A key improvement this season, according to Coach Brownell, is the team’s work ethic. “With new leadership and Coach Wellemeyer returning, the team will be pushed to their limits with the goal of New England and National Championships at the front of their minds. Jai added, “The work and the intensity we put into practices has gone up. The guys are constantly pushing each other on court.”
The Belmont Hill varsity squash team has already begun the season strongly with a 1-0 record. The Panel wishes Coach Brownell and the rest of the varsity squash team the best of luck for the rest of their season!
